Tuy nhiên đằng sau những thành tựu khoa học này có rất nhiều tranh cãi: các thí nghiệm tàn nhẫn trên cơ thể của các loài động vật như chuột, khỉ, thỏ, mèo. Đầu tiên, chúng ta không thử nghiệm trước trên động vật mới là sau đạo đức. Phần lớn được dùng để tìm hiểu quá trình bệnh cũng như phát triển phương pháp điều trị cho nhiều bệnh truyền nhiễm ở người như sốt rét, HIV,... Còn số lượng nhỏ hơn thì dùng trong các nghiên cứu về thần kinh.
