Kể từ thời điểm Việt Nam chính thức gia nhập Tổ chức Thương mại thế giới (WTO), xuất khẩu thủy sản của Việt Nam liên tục đạt được mức kim ngạch và tốc độ tăng khả quan. Đến năm 2009, do ảnh hưởng của khủng hoảng kinh tế thế giới, xuất khẩu nhóm hàng này bị suy giảm (giảm 5,7%) với mức kim ngạch là 4,25 tỷ USD. Trong năm 2010 và năm 2011, xuất khẩu thủy sản khởi sắc với mức kim ngạch và tốc độ tăng lần lượt là 5,02 tỷ USD, 18% và 6,11 tỷ USD, 21,8%. Số liệu Thống kê Hải quan cho thấy trong năm 2012 xuất khẩu nhóm hàng này đạt 6,09 tỷ USD, giảm nhẹ 0,4 % (tương ứng giảm 24 triệu USD về số tuyệt đối) so với năm 2011.

Customs statistics data show that in 2012 export these items was 6.09 billion, a slight decrease of 0.4% (corresponding to 24 million reduction in absolute terms) compared to 2011.
