Với vai trò đầu tàu trong đa giác chiến lược phát triển kinh tế - xã hội, TP. HCM đã trở thành trung tâm kinh tế, văn hoá – du lịch, giáo dục – khoa học kỹ thuật – y tế lớn.

Môi trường thành phố cũng đang bị ô nhiễm trầm trọng do phương tiện giao thông, các công trường xây dựng và công nghiệp sản xuất.Thêm vào đó là những ảnh hưởng của thiên nhiên, lũ lụt. Có thể thấy rất rõ rằng vấn đề ô nhiễm môi trường là vấn đề đáng lo nhất, và ngày càng tụt dốc nhất tại thành phố Hồ Chí minh.
