Singapore - ngọc xanh giữa đại dương sâu thẳm
Nhỏ bé đến mức không có cả đất nông nghiệp, nhưng Singapore luôn là điểm đến được du khách yêu thích và ngưỡng mộ bởi những con đường sạch bóng và cây xanh phủ kín mọi lối đi.

Ông trồng cây thành ngạnh (tên tiếng Anh là Mempat) tại Farrer Circus và mỗi năm lại duy trì truyền thống này.

Năm 2015 - năm kỷ niệm 50 năm lập Singapore, ông Lý Quang Diệu đã không thể cùng nhân dân đón chào cột mốc đầy quan trọng, cũng chẳng thể tiếp tục duy trì truyền thống trồng cây. Thế nhưng, đất nước của ông giờ đây đã thay da đổi thịt. Thành phố vẫn với những khối bê tông dày đặc nhưng đâu đâu cũng thấy cây cối xanh tươi.

Ông từng khẳng định: "Thành phố mà chỉ toàn bê tông, nhựa đường và vỉa hè thì sẽ thành nơi đầy thất vọng, ngột ngạt. Chúng ta cần cân bằng giữa cây cối và hoa lá. Chính chúng sẽ biến Singapore thành vùng đất tuyệt vời để sinh sống".

Ông Lý Quang Diệu từng nói: "Nếu đốn tất cả cây cối, Singapore sẽ trở thành vùng đất u tối và xấu xí".

Ở Singapore cây xanh được bảo vệ bởi luật pháp. Chính phủ quy định rằng các cây di sản - cây trưởng thành trong và ngoài khu vực bảo tồn được pháp luật bảo vệ, ghi nhận giá trị lịch sử và đóng góp cho cảnh quan đất nước.
