Việt Nam không chỉ quan tâm thúc đẩy và làm sâu sắc các mối quan hệ của ASEAN mà còn chú trọng thúc đẩy mở rộng các mối quan hệ ra bên ngoài với những đối tác tiềm năng thế giới. Năm 2010, Canada và Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ đã ký văn kiện gia nhập Hiệp ước TAC, và 27 nước tham gia TAC ký Nghị định thư thứ 3 sửa đổi Hiệp ước này tạo điều kiện để EU có thể sớm tham gia. Cũng trong năm này, ASEAN đã chính thức quyết định chào đón Mỹ và Nga tham gia Cấp cao ASEAN bắt đầu từ năm 2011. Là chủ tịch ASEAN năm 2010, Việt Nam đã đại diện cho ASEAN tham dự Hội nghị Thượng đỉnh nhóm G20 tại Canada và Hàn Quốc.

Vietnam is not just of interest to promote and deepen the relationship of ASEAN but also the importance of promoting expanded relationships outside with the potential partners in the world. In 2010, Canada and Turkey have signed to join the Treaty of TAC, and 27 countries join TAC signed the third Protocol amending the Treaty and create conditions for the EU may soon join. Also in this year, ASEAN has formally decided to welcome the US and Russia joined the ASEAN high level beginning in 2011. As ASEAN Chair 2010, Vietnam has represented the ASEAN to attend the Summit of the G20 group in Canada and South Korea.
