Cùng với việc thoát hiểm để trụ vững, nước ta đã bước lên hàng của những nước có mức thu nhập trung bình, bình quân đầu người đạt trên 1000 USD một năm. Việt Nam là một trong số các nước đạt kết quả cao trong xóa đói giảm nghèo và có đời sống kinh tế phát triển khá, xã hội ổn định. Có thể thấy việc sử dụng bàn tay hữu hình của Nhà nước trong tăng trưởng kinh tế ở thời kỳ đầu đất nước còn chưa phát triển là một trong những nguyên nhân chủ yếu dẫn đến thắng lợi to lớn trong 1/4 thế kỷ đổi mới ở nước ta.
