Ngày “Columbus Day” để kỷ niệm ngày 12 tháng 10 năm 1492 Christopher Columbus lần đầu tiên tìm ra Châu Mỹ. Ông này là người Ý làm việc cho triều đình Tây Ban Nha, cho nên chỉ có hai nước này kỷ niệm ngày trọng đại này đúng ngày Oct-12. Riêng Mỹ là đất nước thừa hưởng thành quả của cuộc thám hiển này, cũng kỷ niệm ngày trọng đai đó nhưng lại chọn vào ngày thứ 2 tuần thứ 2 của tháng 10 hàng năm, và gọi ngày này là “Columbus Day”.
