Ngày 30-5, TAND TP.HCM tuyên phạt Jones Nathan Andrew James (34 tuổi, quốc tịch Úc) mức án chung thân về tội vận chuyển trái phép chất ma túy. Theo cáo trạng, lúc 19g20 ngày 22-10-2013, Nathan Andrew James và vợ làm thủ tục xuất cảnh để về Sydney, Úc thì bị chi cục Hải quan sân bay quốc tế Tân Sơn Nhất phát hiện trong 2 vali hành lý có tổng cộng 3,5 kg heroin được ép mỏng trải đều quanh thành vali.
Tại cơ quan điều tra, Nathan Andrew James khai nhận do ở Úc thiếu tiền của một người tên Tim và không có khả năng trả nợ, Tim bảo James cùng vợ con đi du lịch Việt Nam với Tim, khi về Úc James mang 2 vali về, Tim sẽ lo toàn bộ chi phí và trừ nợ cho James. Ngày 12/10/2013, James đưa vợ con sang Việt Nam du lịch tại Phan Thiết, Bình Thuận. Một tuần sau anh ta đưa gia đình trở lại Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh thuê khách sạn ở quận 1 để chuẩn bị về nước. Tối cùng ngày, anh ta được Tim thuê taxi đưa đi vòng quanh thành phố, sau đó nhận 2 chiếc valy từ người khác đưa cho.
Tại tòa, Nathan Andrew James khai nhận toàn bộ hành vi của mình. Tuy nhiên trong quá trình điều tra, James có biểu hiện không bình thường nên cơ quan điều tra đã tiến hành giám định tâm thần đối với James. Kết quả giám định cho thấy James bị hạn chế năng lực nhận thức hành vi. Sau khi xem xét toàn bộ hồ sơ vụ án, lời khai bị cáo tại phiên tòa, HĐXX quyết định tuyên phạt Nathan Andrew James mức án như trên.
