Năm 1997, đường trục cáp quang Bắc

Năm 1997, đường trục cáp quang Bắc - Nam đầu tiên được đặt trên tuyến truyền tải điện 500kV có 10 sợi quang. Trong đó 4 sợi của ngành Bưu điện, 4 sợi của ngành Điện lực. Bộ Quốc phòng xin được 2 sợi quang còn lại của đường trục cáp quang Bắc - Nam và giao cho Binh chủng Thông tin liên lạc, và Viettel là lực lượng chủ đạo của binh chủng thi công đường trục cáp quang phục vụ quốc phòng đầu tiên mang ký hiệu 1A.
Khởi đầu gian khó khăn nhưng với tốc độ phát triển nhanh thần kỳ, chỉ một thời gian sau, Viettel đã liên tiếp xây dựng mới 4 đường trục cáp quang (1B, 1C, 2B, 1D) dành cho riêng mình với dung lượng từ 40 Gbps đến 110 Gbps và có khả năng đáp ứng tới 400 Gbps, trở thành đơn vị sở hữu mạng trục có dung lượng lớn nhất Việt Nam
