Được biết, nhu cầu tiêu thụ gas ở Việt Nam tăng lên nhanh chóng: năm 1991 nhu cầu tiêu thụ gas cả nước khoảng 50.000 tấn, năm 2000 lên đến 400.000 tấn và năm 2010 đã lên tới 1,2 triệu tấn. Dự báo năm 2015 nhu cầu gas cả nước vào khoảng 1,5 triệu tấn và năm 2020 là 2 triệu tấn. Hiện nay, nguồn cung cấp cho thị trường chủ yếu từ Nhà máy Khí Dinh Cô và Nhà máy Lọc dầu Dung Quất. Tuy nhiên, hai nhà máy này cũng chỉ đáp ứng được khoảng hơn 40% nhu cầu tiêu dùng trong nước, hơn 50% còn lại phải nhập khẩu. Đây là nguyên nhân chủ yếu khiến giá gas trong nước luôn thay đổi, biến động theo giá thế giới.
