Cách Hà Nội khoảng 120 km về hướng Nam, Nhà thờ đá Phát Diệm ( hay Nhà thờ chính tòa Phát Diệm ) là một quần thể nhà thờ Công Giáo rộng khoảng 22ha, nằm tại thị trấn Phát Diệm, huyện Kim Sơn, tỉnh Ninh Bình.

Nhà thờ đá Phát Diệm được báo chí đánh giá là một trong những nhà thờ đẹp nhất Việt Nam và được ví như "kinh đô công giáo" của Việt Nam.

Nhà thờ đá Phát Diệm được xây dựng vào những năm 1875 - 1898. Phát Diệm có nghĩa là phát sinh ra cái đẹp, tên Phát Diệm do Nguyễn Công Trứ đặt.

Quần thể nhà thờ Phát Diệm thể hiện sự giao hòa tinh túy giữa đạo Phật và Công giáo, được thiết kế hình mái cong hệt như đình chùa nhà Phật cũng là nét kiến trúc độc đáo nhất Việt Nam. Tiếp đó là tượng thánh giá ngự trên đài sen, hệt như Phật hiện ngự trên đài sen. Có thể coi đây là lối kiến trúc độc đáo nhất thế giới.

Ðây là một quần thể kiến trúc phương Ðông gồm có (từ hướng nam đi vào): Ao hồ, Phương Ðình, Nhà thờ lớn với bốn nhà thờ cạnh ở hai bên, ba hang đá nhân tạo, nhà thờ đá.

Được xây dựng cách đây hơn một thế kỷ, toàn bộ công trình được xây nên từ những khối đá lớn, phía trong được chạm nhiều bức phù điêu độc đáo và sống động đến lạ thường.

Hoạt động

Hàng năm, Nhà thờ đá Phát Diệm đều tổ chức Lễ hội Giáng sinh.

Lễ hội Giáng sinh ở Nhà thờ Phát Diệm là một dịp sinh hoạt văn hóa cộng đồng lớn nhất của giáo dân giáo phận Phát Diệm cũng như những người dân Kim Sơn. Khoảng nửa tháng trước ngày lễ hội, giáo dân Phát Diệm bắt đầu chuẩn bị cho ngày lễ trọng đại nhất trong năm của những người theo đạo. Họ dành thời gian vào việc trang hoàng lại nhà thờ cho ngày lễ sắp tới.
