Du lịch cộng đồng là phương thức phát triển du lịch trong đó lấy cộng đồng dân cư trực tiếp tham gia vào hoạt động du lịch. Phát triển du lịch cộng đồng không chỉ hướng tới mục tiêu xóa đói, giảm nghèo mà còn tạo điều kiện cho người dân tham gia trực tiếp vào quá trình bảo vệ, gìn giữ, tôn tạo di tích lịch sử, bản sắc văn hóa và cảnh quan thiên nhiên, môi trường sinh thái, đồng thời quảng bá các loại hình văn hóa đặc sắc của người dân tộc thiểu số vùng cao.
Trong năm 2014, hoạt động du lịch cộng đồng tỉnh Lào Cai phát triển khởi sắc doanh thu ước đạt gần 50 tỷ đồng. Đây là tín hiệu vui đối với người dân được hưởng lợi từ loại hình du lịch này tại các địa phương trên địa bàn tỉnh và là một trong những mô hình đang được nhân rộng ở nhiều điểm du lịch thuộc các bản, làng vùng cao của tỉnh Lào Cai.
