Khi quan tâm đến ảnh hưởng của tia cực tím lên sức khỏe con người và môi trường, thì phổ của tia cực tím chia ra làm các phần: UVA (380-315 nm), hay gọi là sóng dài hay "ánh sáng đen"; UVB (315-280 nm) gọi là bước sóng trung bình; và UVC (ngắn hơn 280 nm) gọi là sóng ngắn hay có tính tiệt trùng.
