Người nhập khẩu là người giao dịch với hãng tàu hay đại lý vận tải nhưng không phải là người giao hàng nên phải có nghiệp vụ chỉ định hãng tàu cho người xuất khẩu. Nghiệp vụ chỉ định tàu được thực hiện theo các bước sau:

Bước 1: Lựa chọn và lập thông báo chỉ định tàu bao gồm tên tàu, số hiệu, tên chuyến, lịch trình, quốc tịch, cùng đi, cùng đến, ngày dự kiến đi và đến. Đặc biệt là tên người phụ trách và hãng hay đại lý vận tải kèm theo điện thoại và fax liên hệ tại quốc gia bên xuất khẩu.
