3. Định nghĩa các số “0”:
- Số “0 Hải Đồ” hay còn gọi là số “0 Độ Sâu” là mực chuẩn quy ước độ sâu của biển. Ở Việt Nam mực chuẩn này được lấy trùng với mức nước cực tiểu của thủy triều thiên văn (Mức nước ròng thấp nhất có thể xảy ra).
- Số “0 lục Địa” là chuẩn mực dung để đo các độ cao trên đất liền như độ cao của đê, đập, cầu cảng,… Được lấy trùng với mực nước biển trung bình nhiều năm .
- Số “0 Nhà Nước” hay cò gọi là số “ 0 Quốc Gia” là số “0 Lục Địa” được Nhà nước lấy làm độ cao chuẩn. Ờ Việt Nam số “0 nhà nước”được lấy trùng với mực nước trung bình nhiều năm tại Hon Dau. Như vậy, Hon Dau số “0 Độ Sâu” thấp hơn số “0 nhà Nước”khoảng 1.9m (1.86m).
- Thí dụ: Nếu mực nước thủy triều dự tính trong bảng thủy triều ( Nghĩa là so với số “0 Hải Đồ”) cho hải phòng là 3.9m chẳng hạn thì quy về số “0 lục địa” sẽ là:
