So với thời kỳ đầu thành lập Vườn, số loài động vật tăng gấp 3 lần, số cá thể tăng gấp 2 lần. Hiện nay Vườn thú Thủ Lệ đã có gần 600 cá thể thuộc hơn 100 loài bao gồm: 35 loài thú, 50 loài chim, 5 loài bò sát lưỡng cư, 40 loài cá nước mặn.
