Suy dinh dưỡng là tình trạng thiếu hụt các chất dinh dưỡng cần thiết làm ảnh hưởng đến quá trình sống, hoạt động và tăng trưởng bình thường của cơ thể bé. Theo tổ chức Y tế Thế giới, có khoảng 54% trường hợp tử vong của trẻ dưới 5 tuổi ở các nước đang phát triển liên quan đến thiếu dinh dưỡng ở mức độ vừa và nhẹ. Các gia đình thường không biết cách phòng chống suy dinh dưỡng ở bé, đến khi bệnh tiến triển nặng kéo dài quá lâu để lại di chứng thì mới phát hiện được bệnh. Đặc biệt với bé bị suy dinh dưỡng thể nhẹ và vừa ít được người mẹ và các thành viên khác trong gia đình chú ý tới vì bé vẫn bình thường. Ở một cộng đồng có nhiều bé suy dinh dưỡng, ta càng khó nhận biết được vì thể trạng của chúng đều giống nhau. Vì vậy, việc hiểu biết về cách phòng chống suy dinh dưỡng sớm ở bé là quan trọng với tất cả mọi người.
