Cá heo nước ngọt trên sông Mêkông có tên tiếng Anh là Mekong Irrawaddy
dolphins (Orcaella brevirostris) và còn được người dân vùng ven sông Tiền và
sông Hậu của Việt Nam gọi là “Ông Nược”. Đây là một loài thú nhỏ sống ở nước,
có chiều dài 200-275 cm và trọng lượng 100-250 kg. Chúng có 5 phân nhóm phân
bố theo các vùng địa lý khác nhau, từ phía Tây là vịnh Belgal tới phía Đông là
Palawan (Philippines) và xuống phía Nam tới vùng ven biển miền nam Sulawesi
(Indonesia). Orcaella cũng được biết có xuất hiện ở Australia/Papua New Guinea,
nhưng đã được xác định gần đây chính là một loài mới - Australian Snubfin
dolphin, Orcaella heinsohni (Beasley & ctv. 2002, 2005).
Irrawaddy dolphins ở khu vực Đông Nam Á có thể gồm 3 phân nhóm phân bố ở
các vùng gần cửa sông của 3 hệ thống sông chính: 1- Ayeyarwaddy (Myanmar), 2-
Mekong (Nam Lào, Cambodia và Việt Nam) và 3- Mahakam (Indonesia). Chúng
cũng xuất hiện ở hai hệ thống hồ/vịnh: hồ Chilika (India) và hồ Songkhla
(Thailand). Tuy nhiên, chưa
có nghiên cứu nào đối với loài cá này được thực hiện xa xuống phía nam, thuộc
phần sông Mêkông của Việt Nam trong khi thông tin về chúng ở địa phận của Việt
Nam là rất hiếm hoi. Vì vậy, Đại học James Cook University (Mekong Dolphin
