Xét về mục đích và tính chất, lợi ích nhóm có thể phân chia thành hai loại: lợi ích nhóm tích cực và lợi ích nhóm tiêu cực.

Lợi ích nhóm tích cực là lợi ích chính đáng, hợp pháp của một nhóm người. Trong xã hội tồn tại nhiều giai cấp, tầng lớp, nhóm người có đặc điểm, hoàn cảnh khác nhau, việc hình thành lợi ích nhóm tích cực là một nhu cầu khách quan, chính đáng, tự nhiên. Lợi ích của các thành viên trong tổ chức công đoàn, phụ nữ, thanh niên, người khuyết tật v.v… cũng là lợi ích nhóm tích cực. Như vậy, lợi ích nhóm tích cực là lợi ích chính đáng, hợp pháp, phù hợp, không mâu thuẫn với lợi ích của dân tộc quốc gia, hướng tới và hài hòa với lợi ích xã hội, lợi ích dân tộc và quốc gia.
