Trước đây biển thì rất là đẹp, là nơi thu hút nhiều khách tham quan du lịch và cũng là nơi cư chú của nhiều loài sinh vật biển đẹp có lợi cho môi trường sinh thái. Nhưng giờ đây biển lại là nơi tiếp nhận phần lớn các chất thải làm các biểu hiện của sự ô nhiễm biển khá đa dạng như:
Gia tăng nồng độ của các chất ô nhiễm trong nước biển như dầu, kim loại nặng, các hoá chất độc hại.
 Gia tăng nồng độ các chất ô nhiễm tích tụ trong trầm tích biển vùng ven bờ.
 Suy thoái các hệ sinh thái biển như hệ sinh thái san hô, hệ sinh thái rừng ngập mặn, cỏ biển v.v...
 Suy giảm trữ lượng các loài sinh vật biển và giảm tính đa dạng sinh học biển.
 Xuất hiện các hiện tượng như thuỷ triều đỏ, tích tụ các chất ô nhiễm trong các thực phẩm lấy từ biển.
Vậy nguyên nhân chính là do đâu ?
Các nguồn ô nhiễm từ lục địa theo sông ngòi mang ra biển như dầu và sản phẩm dầu, nước thải, phân bón nông nghiệp, thuốc trừ sâu, chất thải công nghiệp, chất thải phóng xạ và nhiều chất ô nhiễm khác. Một số chất thải loại này sẽ lắng tại vùng biển ven bờ. Một số chất khác bị phân huỷ và lan truyền trong toàn khối nước biển.
