Chỉ chưa đầy 4 năm mà ở xã Chỉ Đạo (Văn Lâm, Hưng Yên) đã có gần 40 người chết vì căn bệnh ung thư quái ác, cao hơn nhiều lần so với những người chết vì tuổi già lão hóa. Theo những người dân sinh sống ở đây thì hiện tượng bất thường này có nguyên nhân chủ yếu là do sự ô nhiễm môi trường phát sinh từ mấy chục cơ sở tái chế nguyên liệu chì công nghiệp trong chính địa bàn xã. Cụ thể, từ cách đây gần ba mươi năm, nhiều người dân khu vực này đã bắt đầu xây dựng những cơ sở tái chế chì nhỏ lẻ để mưu sinh. Qua nhiều ngày tháng, thậm chí nhiều năm, những hóa chất chì này có thể bị rò rỉ, phát tán ra ngoài, lây nhiễm vào nguồn nước, vào những vật chất mà người dân vẫn thường xuyên tiếp xúc. Chính vì thế, hậu quả của nó thật sự là khôn lường. Không kể đến nhiều người chết bất thường vì căn bệnh ung thư bỗng nhiên hoành hành ở đây, việc rất nhiều trẻ em bị suy dinh dưỡng, bị thiểu năng trí tuệ hay chậm phát triển cũng có thể xuất phát từ việc môi trường ở khu vực làng nghề này bị ô nhiễm chì nặng nề.
