Năm 1789, ở Pháp bắt đầu xuất hiện chủ nghĩa nữ quyền. Năm 1791, Olympe de Gouges đã soạn thảo Tuyên ngôn về quyền của phụ nữ và công dân để yêu cầu nhà chức trách công nhận cho phụ nữ các quyền giống như quyền đã được tuyên bố trong Tuyên ngôn về nhân quyền và dân quyền Pháp năm 1789.
- Ngày 8/3/1857, để chống lại việc bị bắt buộc phải lao động 12 giờ một ngày trong những điều kiện làm việc hết sức khắc nghiệt, các nữ công nhân ngành dệt tại New York - Mỹ đã đứng lên đấu tranh chống lại giới chủ.
- Năm 1972, Tổng Thư ký Liên Hợp quốc yêu cầu Ủy ban về Địa vị của phụ nữ tiến hành các hoạt động nghiên cứu và khảo sát đề chuẩn bị ban hành một công ước với mục tiêu như trên. Công ước được hoàn thành năm 1979 và được Đại hội đồng Liên Hợp quốc thông qua ngày 18/12/1979 với tên gọi Công ước về xóa bỏ tất cả các hình thức phân biệt đối xử chống lại phụ nữ (CEDAW) và có hiệu lực từ ngày 3/8/1981.

Tính đến nay đã có hơn 185 quốc gia thành viên tham gia Công ước. (Việt Nam là một trong những quốc gia đầu tiên trên thế giới ký tham gia Công ước vào ngày 29/7/1980 và phê chuẩn vào ngày 27/11/1981).Tuy nhiên, vẫn còn một số quốc gia, trong đó có Mỹ chưa phê chuẩn.
- Ở Việt Nam: ngày 20/10 hàng năm được coi như là ngày tôn vinh phái đẹp Việt Nam.
