Thép là ngành sản xuất có tốc độ phát triển tương đối nhanh. Trong 10 năm trở lại đây bình quân hàng năm tăng 20% về sản lượng. Sản xuất thép đáp ứng 55% nhu cầu nội địa vì ngành thép là ngành hết sức quan trọng trong cơ cấu nền kinh tế quốc dân. Ở một nền kinh tế còn phải gia tăng phát triển và hoàn thiện cơ sở hạ tầng trong nhiều năm tới như Việt Nam, thì muốn tăng trưởng GDP, bắt buộc ngành thép – ngành nguyên vật liệu cơ bản, phải có sự tăng trưởng.
