Một khảo sát của Hiệp hội Du lịch Châu Á - Thái Bình Dương cho thấy, có đến 80% khách du lịch quốc tế đến Việt Nam và một đi không trở lại.
Nguyên nhân đầu tiên mà khách du lịch cảm thấy sợ khi đến Việt Nam là bị “chặt chém”. Những gánh hàng rong hay quán xá vỉa hè, cả kể nhà hàng sang trọng cũng luôn buộc họ vào nghi ngờ, cảnh giác. Bởi họ sợ bị lừa, mua phải giá cao cắt cổ. Mà kỳ thực là cũng nhiều trường hợp bị lừa thật. Tôi nghĩ đến John McCarthy và chiếc quần đùi 500.000 đồng.
John, 30 tuổi, người Mỹ kinh nghiệm 8 năm trong ngành du lịch. Những ngày còn lại, chúng tôi cùng nhau đi Đà Nẵng - Phú Yên - Nha Trang - Sài Gòn - Cần Thơ. John tỏ ra thích thú, chụp, ghi hình lại tất cả các khoảnh khắc đã trôi qua trước mắt. Cả kể khi bị chèo kéo, ép mua hàng và thậm chí là bị dọa đánh, đập máy ảnh, John vẫn cố gắng chụp lại. Cậu ta bảo “đó là trải nghiệm trong đời”.
Kết thúc 10 ngày du hành Việt Nam, tiễn John ra sân bay và trở về Mỹ, John luôn miệng cảm ơn tôi bởi những ngày làm hướng dẫn viên du lịch và không ngớt lời ca ngợi thiên nhiên, phong cảnh Việt Nam tuyệt đẹp.
Tuy nhiên, cậu ta lại nói rằng: “Tôi đến Việt Nam là đi cho biết và sẽ không bao giờ quay lại đất nước của bạn một lần nữa đâu”.

John, Larry hay Philippe chỉ là một trong số rất nhiều du khách đến Việt Nam một lần sau đó không muốn quay lại. Trước đó, nhiều bạn bè, đồng nghiệp của tôi họ cũng từng nói chưa có ý định và chưa biết bao giờ mới quay lại Việt Nam. Trong khi, lại nói rằng, họ muốn đi Thái Lan, Myanmar, Cambodia…
Rõ ràng, với việc sở hữu nguồn tài nguyên thiên nhiên trù phú, các danh lam thắng cảnh đều được thế giới công nhận thì tiềm năng du lịch Việt Nam hơn hẳn Thái Lan, Singapore, Malaysia...
