Mỗi khi nhắc đến hồ Hoàn Kiếm, hẳn nhiều người còn nhớ đến những công trình kiến trúc đầy ấn tượng như tháp Bút, đài Nghiên, cầu Thê Húc dẫn vào lầu Đắc Nguyệt hay đình Trấn Ba, tháp Rùa… có liên hệ gần gũi với đền Ngọc Sơn trên đảo Ngọc giữa hồ. Nguyên đảo có tên là Tượng Nhĩ (tai voi), đến thời Lý được đổi thành Ngọc Tượng Sơn. Tên Ngọc Sơn là có từ thời Trần.
Trong thời vua Lê, trên đảo Ngọc Sơn chúa Trịnh Giang đã cho xây dựng cung Khánh Thụy để làm điểm vui chơi, sau này Trịnh Doanh cũng cho đắp thêm cạnh bờ hồ chỗ đối diện với cung Khánh Thụy một gò đất và đặt tên là Ngọc Bội Sơn. Cung Khánh Thụy về sau đã bị Lê Chiêu Thống đốt trụi. Đến cuối đời Lê, trên nền cũ của cung Khánh Thụy đã xây dựng chùa Ngọc Sơn thờ Phật. Qua thời Nguyễn, chùa được chuyển thành đền thờ Văn Xương Đế Quân, rồi lại phối thờ Lã Động Tiên, Quan Vân Trường. Sau này người Hà thành đã đưa vào thờ tướng quân Trần Hưng Đạo, nhà quân sự thiên tài đã ba lần chiến thắng quân Nguyên - Mông thế kỷ thứ 13.
