Hoàn cảnh đất nước đã bị phân chia thành hai miền Nam- Bắc. Và danh từ " Đàng Trong" được gọi cho miền Nam và danh từ " Đàng ngoài " được dùng cho miền Bắc vào thời bấy giờ. Và các vị vua triều Nguyễn sau khi băng hà đã được truy tôn là " Hoàng đế" ( trong các sách sử của Việt Nam đều ghi chép như vậy; và trong bài nghiên cứu này, người viết cũng dùng danh từ " Vua" thay thế cho danh từ " Chúa" để nói về người đứng đầu của mỗi triều đại nhà Nguyễn)
Khi chúng ta đề cập đến sự phát triển của triều đại nhà Nguyễn, thì chúng ta không thể không nhắc đến triều đại nhà Hậu Lê. Bởi vì nhà Nguyễn đã được thành lập và phát triển từ những nguyên nhân khách quan và chủ quan của sự suy yếu của triều đại Hậu Lê. Chúng ta có thể thấy cụ thể như sau:
Thứ nhất, về mặt chính trị, lúc này đất nước bị loạn lạc. Sự phân chia các phe phái trong triều đình nhà Hậu , đã tạo ra nhiều mâu thuẫn trong nội bộ. Đứng trước những biến cố này, triều đại Hậu Lê đã thể hiện sự bất lực và yếu kém. Do đó , vì sự an toàn và tồn tại cho chính mình, tướng Đoan Quận Công Nguyễn Hoàng đã phải rời khỏi miền Bắc , xin vào trấn thủ Thanh Hoá ( miền nam Việt Nam) năm 1558. Về sau, ông đã lập nên triều đại nhà Nguyễn vào năm 1600. Ông là một vị tướng lập được nhiều chiến công, và ông đã nhận được nhiều sự tín nhiệm bởi vua Lê và các tướng sĩ. Đây là tiền đề của sự lập nghiệp của ông sau này. Khi ông rời khỏi miền Bắc để vào miền Nam, hàng ngàn tướng sĩ và thân quyến tự nguyện đi theo để trợ giúp ông. Vì vậy , thế lực của ông đã ngày càng thêm lớn mạnh.
