Ngày 1/11/2008, một trận lũ ập tới khiến con đập của hồ Đồng Mô bị vỡ tạo cơ hội cho cá thể rùa thoát ra khỏi hồ. Ngay sau đó, một tấm lưới chắn đã được giăng ngang khu vực ngập úng dài khoảng 4km kể từ đầu đập để ngăn cá thể này thoát ra sông Hồng. Sáng ngày 26/11/2008, một ngư dân đã bắt được rùa trong khu vực chắn lưới. Cùng ngày hôm đó, một ngư dân ở phường Trung Sơn Trầm, thị xã Sơn Tây, Hà Nội (Hà Tây cũ) đã bắt được một cá thể rùa mai mềm có kích thước lớn, nặng 69 kg, dài khoảng 90cm. Cá thể rùa này đã được giám định thuộc loài giải Swinhoe ( Rafetus swinhoei ), là một trong bốn cá thể còn tồn tại trên thế giới. Sau khi biết tin cá thể rùa quý bị bắt, Chi cục Kiểm lâm Hà Nội (FPD) đã nhanh chóng cử cán bộ tới hiện trường nhằm bảo vệ, thuyết phục người dân chuyển giao rùa. Sau hơn 6 tiếng thương lượng với sự có mặt của cán bộ kiểm lâm, cảnh sát và chính quyền địa phương, người dân đã đồng ý chuyển giao cá thể rùa cho chính quyền. Các cán bộ ATP, EVN và Trung tâm Bảo tồn Rùa (TCC) thuộc vườn quốc gia Cúc Phương đã thả cá thể rùa về hồ Đồng Mô, nơi mà rùa đã thoát ra.
