Trong ngành công nghiệp vật liệu xây dựng : Vật liệu xây dựng sản xuất theo phương pháp truyền thống tiêu tốn nhiều nguyên liệu, năng lượng, cho hiệu quả kinh tế thấp, lại gây ô nhiễm môi trường nặng nề, cần được xử lý trong quá trình công nghiệp hóa. Một trong những mục tiêu phấn đấu đến năm 2020 của ngành công nghiệp Vật liệu xây dựng là xây dựng một nền công nghiệp thân thiện với môi trường, hướng đến một nền công nghiệp xanh. Định hướng trong "Quy hoạch tổng thể phát triển vật liệu xây dựng Việt Nam đến năm 2020" có đề cập đến vấn đề chú trọng phát triển vật liệu mới, thân thiện với môi trường.
1. Gạch không nung
Một trong những loại vật liệu xây dựng tác động lớn đến môi trường là gạch đất nung. Nhiều nước trên thế giới đã giảm sử dụng gạch đất sét nung, chuyển sang dùng gạch không nung với tỷ lệ 50-70%.
Theo số liệu thống kê do TS Trần Văn Huynh, Chủ tịch Hội Vật liệu xây dựng Việt Nam cung cấp thì sản xuất gạch đất sét nung ở nước ta hàng năm phải khai thác lượng đất sét lớn 1,5m3/ 1.000 viên gạch. Như vậy, sản xuất gạch đất nung tiêu tốn lượng lớn đất nông nghiệp. Hơn nữa, lò sản xuất gạch thủ công gây ô nhiễm môi trường nặng nề. Công nghệ khai thác chế biến nguyên liệu để sản xuất vật liệu xây dựng truyền thống chủ yếu dưới dạng sản xuất nhỏ, công nghệ lạc hậu, làm ăn manh mún, dẫn đến chất lượng kém, lãng phí tài nguyên nghiêm trọng, phá hoại môi trường sinh thái.

Ước tính năm 2010, sản xuất 24 tỷ viên gạch tiêu tốn 36 triệu m3 đất sét, tương đương với 1.800 ha đất canh tác. Trong 10 năm từ 2011-2020, để sản xuất 374 tỷ viên gạch phải khai thác 560 triệu m3 đất sét, tương đương với 28.000 ha đất canh tác và tiêu tốn khoảng 60 triệu tấn than. Do đó, đẩy mạnh việc sử dụng vật liệu xây dựng thân thiện với môi trường trở thành một xu hướng tất yếu trong ngành công nghiệp vật liệu xây dựng.
