Trong một khảo sát, chuyên gia dinh dưỡng của Đại học Cambridge đã cho hơn 30 trẻ em 7-8 tuổi làm bài kiểm tra IQ, và kết quả cho thấy rằng trẻ em bú sữa mẹ thường có chỉ số IQ cao hơn so với trẻ ăn sữa công thức 10 điểm. Sữa mẹ chứa nhiều hoạt chất có thể thúc đẩy phát triển não bộ của trẻ em, đặc biệt là axit amin đặc biệt được gọi là taurine.
