Năm 1253, Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám, trường đại học đầu tiên của Việt Nam ra đời và cũng là nơi thờ Khổng Tử. Nơi đây chuyên đào tạo cho các Nho sĩ đã có trình độ đến học tập, đó là minh chứng cho thấy Khổng giáo đã chiếm ưu thế trong triều đình và hàng ngũ trí thức so với Phật giáo (giáo sư Trần Văn Giàu, 1993, trang 73).
