Thờ cúng tổ tiên đã trở thành một tập tục truyền thống, có vị trí hết sức đặc biệt trong đời sống tinh thần của dân tộc Việt Nam, là một trong các thành tố tạo nên bản sắc văn hóa Việt Nam. Tín ngưỡng thờ cúng tổ tiên rất giản dị: tin rằng tổ tiên mình là thiêng liêng, họ đi vào cõi vĩnh hằng nhưng vẫn sống cạnh con cháu, họ phù hộ cho con cháu khi gặp tai ách, khó khăn; vui mừng khi con cháu gặp may mắn, khuyến khích cho con cháu khi gặp điều lành và cũng quở trách con cháu khi làm những điều tội lỗi...
Trải qua bao thăng trầm, biến cố của lịch sử, trong khi nhiều tôn giáo, tín ngưỡng dân gian khác đã phải chịu cảnh long đong, bị kết tội “mê tín dị đoan” nhưng tín ngưỡng thờ tổ tiên đã và vẫn chiếm được vị trí thiêng liêng trong đời sống tinh thần của người Việt
