Trước khi Vườn thú Hà Nội hoàn thàn

Trước khi Vườn thú Hà Nội hoàn thành, thú được nuôi tại Vườn Bách Thảo Hà Nội. Năm 1975, Vườn thú tiếp nhận số động vật từ Bách Thảo chuyển tới với chỉ có 30 loài và gần 300 cá thể. Trong đó, chủ yếu là đàn hươu, nai, 4 con voi, 2 hổ, 2 báo hoa mai... và một số chim thú, bò sát nhỏ khác.
