Sự gia tăng dân số quá nhanh đã tạo nên sức ép rất lớn đối với nguồn tài nguyên thiên nhiên, sự phát triển kinh tế - xã hội, chất lượng cuộc sống của người dân. Hiện nay, do ngày càng nhận thức được ảnh hưởng của dân số đến sự phát triển của đất nước cũng như hạnh phúc gia đình, ngày càng nhiều người tích cực tham gia thực hiện kế hoạch hóa gia đình. Người ta hi vọng đến năm 2005 có thể giảm tỷ lệ tăng dân số hàng năm xuống còn 1,5%.
