 Thị trấn Bangui do người Pháp lập ra năm 1889 ở xứ Haut-Oubangui, sau đổi tên thành xứ Oubangui-Chari, tức là tiền thân của nước Cộng hòa Trung Phi. Đây là một trong bốn xứ của Phi châu Xích đạo thuộc Pháp lập nên năm 1910. Bangui giữ địa vị hành chánh dưới thời Pháp thuộc cũng như sau năm 1960 là thủ đô của quốc gia mới.
 Bangui trải qua nhiều biến động sau khi quốc vương Bokassa bị truất năm 1979. Cuộc đảo chánh năm 1981 đưa tướng André Kolingba lên cầm quyền. Chính thể độc tài của Kolingba chấm dứt năm 1992 dưới áp lực quốc tế với cuộc tổng tuyển cử nhưng phe quân đội không phục tùng tân chính phủ của Ange-Félix Patassé và tiếp tục phá rối. Cuối thập niên 1990 Pháp phải can thiệp để dẹp yên bạo động. Lực lượng Bảo an Phi châu (MISAB) và quân đội Liên Hiệp Quốc (MINURCA) tiếp thu Bangui đến năm 2000 mới rút đi. Dù vậy tình hình Bangui và Trung Phi nói chung vẫn không yên sau nhiều đợt khủng hoảng nhiên liệu, lương bổng.
Năm 2003 quân phiến loạn do François Bozizé chỉ huy chiếm được Bangui. Patassé phải lưu vong sang Togo.
