Hiện nay, hàng hoá container bằng đường biển ở khu vực phía Nam chủ yếu thông qua cảng biển khu vực Cảng Cát Lái – Sài Gòn (khoảng trên 64.8%), còn lại thông qua cụm Cảng Cái Mép – Phú Mỹ (Vũng Tàu). Tuy nhiên 55% lượng hàng container đi và đến cảng biển này hiện nay được vận tải bằng đường bộ, đường sắt chỉ chiếm khoảng 5% và đường sông chỉ chiếm khoảng 40%. Bên cạnh đó, hơn 80% khối lượng hàng container đi và đến cảng biển hiện nay có cự ly vận chuyển trong nội địa trung bình 100 -120km, một cự ly mà trong điều kiện hiện nay đường sắt và đường sông khó có thể cạnh tranh về chi phí và thời gian vận chuyển so với đường bộ.
