Việc thu gom, xử lý đồ tái chế tại Việt Nam hiện vẫn chưa được các cơ quan chức năng quan tâm và hướng dẫn xử lý đúng quy trình mà chủ yếu do lực lượng cơ sở tư nhân đảm nhiệm. Tình trạng này kéo dài sẽ gây nguy cơ ô nhiễm môi trường cao, tác động nghiêm trọng đến chất lượng môi trường sống cũng như sức khỏe cộng đồng.
Để khắc phục tình trạng trên, Thứ trưởng Bùi Cách Tuyến cho biết, Thủ tướng Chính phủ đã ban hành Quyết định số 50/2013/QĐ-TTg ngày 9/8/2013 về thu hồi và xử lý sản phẩm thải bỏ. Từ ngày 1/1/2015 các sản phẩm thải bỏ như ắc quy và pin, thiết bị điện tử, điện dân dụng và công nghiệp, hóa chất sử dụng trong công nghiệp, nông nghiệp, thủy sản và thuốc sử dụng cho người, dầu nhớt, mỡ bôi trơn… sẽ bị thu hồi và xử lý.
