Trong khoảng thời gian đầu tháng 4/2016 tại khu vực ven biển thuộc địa phận các tỉnh: Hà Tĩnh, Quảng Bình, Quảng Trị, Thừa Thiên - Huế đã xảy ra hiện tượng thủy sản nuôi trồng, thủy hải sản tự nhiên chết bất thường, không rõ nguyên nhân, gây thiệt hại về kinh tế, môi trường, ảnh hưởng tiêu cực đến hoạt động nuôi trồng, khai thác, sản xuất kinh doanh thủy hải sản cũng như ảnh hưởng đến đời sống và tư tưởng của người dân.
