Quá trình mở rộng không gian đô thị, xây dựng cơ sở hạ tầng, khai thác tài nguyên đất và sự phát triển nhanh của ngành công nghiệp, du lịch của địa phương đã gây nên những tác động đến môi trường không khí, môi trường sinh thái và đa dạng sinh học của thành phố. Năm 2010, tổng lượng nước thải công nghiệp khoảng 6.835 m³/ngày. Các dự án lấn biển như Khu đô thị Đa Phước, Khu dịch vụ thủy sản Thọ Quang, Khu dịch vụ hậu cần Cảng Đà Nẵng,...có nguy cơ tác độ đến môi trường, hệ sinh thái vùng bờ Đà Nẵng. Kết quả điều tra năm 2006 cho thấy diện tích san hô khu vực ven biển Đà Nẵng không có khả năng phục hồi là 81%. Năm 2012, Khu dịch vụ thủy sản Thọ Quang là điểm nóng nhất về ô nhiễm môi trường trên địa bàn thành phố. Chất lượng nước ở các con sông cũng có vấn đề, đặc biệt là vùng hạ lưu, các sông đều bị ô nhiễm bởi một lượng khá lớn coliform, BOD5, COD và chất khác. Trong nội ô thành phố Đà Nẵng, lượng bụi, lưu huỳnh điôxit, tiếng ồn, hóa chất độc hại đều vượt tiêu chuẩn cho phép.

Trước tình trạng ô nhiễm môi trường, vào tháng 10 năm 2008, ủy ban nhân dân thành phố Đà Nẵng đã phê duyệt đề án "Xây dựng Đà Nẵng - Thành phố môi trường". Đề án được xây dựng trên tiêu chí đến năm 2020, các yêu cầu về chất lượng môi trường đất, chất lượng môi trường nước, chất lượng môi trường không khí trên toàn thành phố được đảm bảo, tạo sự an toàn về sức khoẻ và môi trường cho người dân, các nhà đầu tư, cho du khách trong và ngoài nước khi đến với Đà Nẵng.
