This is the core of the debate. Endless growth is an absurd concept to the typical ecology, because we live on a planet with finite resources, the exploitation and use some of which were undermining support system life support our planet. But economists believe that we typically can "decouple" GNP growth from the use of resources through increased efficiency that tends to be intrinsic to capitalism: that we can develop our economy and reverse the degradation of the environment too. Tesco, as it were, can continue to build more stores for ever, as long as they are increasingly resource-efficient.
