Đĩa CD nhìn tổng quan là một miếng nhựa tròn dày tầm 1,2mm. Cụ thể nó là mảnh nhựa Polycarbonate ép khuôn tròn có bán kính khoảng 6cm. Cấu tạo chính gồm bốn phần cơ bản như sau.
