Tổng diện tích tự nhiên Quận Thủ Đức năm 2005 giảm 11,12 ha do thu thập số liệu từ tổng điều tra diện tích tự nhiên của Phòng Tài nguyên – Môi trường năm 2005 và do đo vẽ lại bản đồ địa chính.
Biến động đất nông nghiệp: Giai đoạn từ năm 2000 đến năm 2005, diện tích đất nông nghiệp giảm 322,87 ha do chuyển sang đất ở và đất chuyên dùng đáp ứng nhu cầu về đất, mở rộng đường giao thông đáp ứng nhu cầu đi lại và vận chuyển hàng hóa của người dân; cụ thể như sau:
- Đất ở: 228,85 ha.
- Đất có mục đích công cộng: 94,03 ha.
Trong cơ cấu đất nông nghiệp thì có sự chuyển đổi đất trồng cây hàng năm sang đất trồng cây lâu năm cụ thể đất trồng cây hàng năm giảm 629,02 ha, đất trồng cây lâu năm tăng 336,39 ha. Ngoài ra, đất nuôi trồng thủy sản giảm 30,24 ha.
Biến động đất phi nông nghiệp: Đất phi nông nghiệp tăng 337,58 ha do chuyển từ đất trồng cây hàng năm và do nhu cầu về đất ở tăng lên vi áp lực dân số và nhu cầu mở rộng đường giao thông, phát triển các khu công nghiệp , khu chế xuất, xí nghiệp…
Biến động đất chưa sử dụng: diện tích đất chưa sử dụng giảm 25,83 ha do khai hoang, cải tạo để sử dụng vào sản xuất nông nghiệp và mục đích đất ở.

Biến động đất nông nghiệp: Đất nông nghiệp giảm 292,73 ha, củ yếu là giảm từ đất trồng cây lâu năm (197,43 ha), đất trồng cây hàng năm (82,61 ha), Đất nuôi trồng thủy sản (12,69 ha) để chuyển sang đất ở, đất giao thông, đất xây dựng trụ sở cơ quan, bưu điện, cụ thể như sau:
- Đất ở: 264,14 ha.
- Đất chuyên dùng: 53,84 ha.
Biến động đất phi nông nghiệp: Đất phi nông nghiệp tăng 292,72 ha do cguyển từ đất nông nghiệp để sử dụng vào mục đích ở và xây dựng các công trình công cộng, cụ thể:
- Đất ở tăng: 264,14 ha.
- Đất có mục đích công cộng tăng: 50,11 ha.
Đất sông suối và mặt nước chuyên dùng giảm 24,82 ha
