Một thống kê gần đây của sở y tế cho biết, có tới 70% trong số 31000 cơ sở chế biến sản xuất và kinh doanh thực phẩm tại thành phố HCM không đạt tiêu chuẩn vệ sinh an toàn thực phẩm, trong khi đó, có khoảng 75% lượng thực phẩm đang tiêu thụ trên cả nước là do các cơ sở tại thành phố HCM cung cấp.
Còn lại các chợ ở Hà Nội, theo kết quả kiểm tra của cơ quan chức năng, cứ 5 mẫu thịt thì có 4 mẫu không đạt chỉ tiêu vi sinh vật, đa số các mẫu rau muống đều bị nhiễm vi khuẩn coliform vượt mức cho phép. Theo bộ Y tế, hầu hết các cơ sở bán thức ăn đường phố đều không chấp hành các quy luật về vệ sinh an toàn thực phẩm và không rõ nguồn gốc xuất xứ của thực phẩm chế biến
