Không biết chính xác nghĩa của từ (denotation)
Từ vựng trong tiếng Anh vô cùng phong phú. Ngoài những từ đồng nghĩa ra, có nhiều từ đồng âm nhưng cách viết và nghĩa khác nhau (homophones) như I/ eye, sun/ son.... Bên cạnh đó lại có những từ đồng âm và đồng cách viết mang nghĩa khác nhau (homonyms) như left, flat, saw, play, ...Do đó sinh viên gặp rất nhiều khó khăn trong việc hiểu tường tận, chính xác nghĩa của từ, sự khác nhau về cách dùng của những từ có nghĩa tương đồng cũng như từ loại của chúng. Chính điều này dẫn tới việc sinh viên thường mắc lỗi về từ vựng khi viết bài luận tiếng Anh.
