Đền Bắc Lệ được xây dựng vào khoảng thế kỷ XVI-XVII, trải qua năm tháng ngôi đền nhiều lần được trùng tu, tôn tạo nhưng vẫn giữ được nét đẹp của kiến trúc và những di vật cổ có giá trị như : 19 bức tượng lớn, nhỏ làm từ gỗ mít, những bức hoành phi, câu đối được trạm trổ tinh tế. Đền là một trong ba trung tâm thờ Mẫu nổi tiếng linh thiêng ở miền Bắc Việt Nam. Nét độc đáo nhất của đền Bắc Lệ ở chỗ: Đối tượng được suy tôn trong đền là Bà chúa Thượng Ngàn - một trong ba vị thuộc Tam tòa Thánh Mẫu trong tín ngưỡng thờ Mẫu của người Việt Nam. Ngoài đối tượng thờ chính là Bà chúa Thượng Ngàn, Đền còn tôn thờ Chầu Bé. Theo dân gian, Chầu Bé là một nhân vật từng sống trong vùng, có thể thay mặt đức Thánh Mẫu thực hiện và đáp ứng những lời nguyện cầu của người dân.
Đền Bắc Lệ đã gắn với nhiều sự kiện lịch sử quan trọng của địa phương. Sau cách mạng tháng 8 - 1945, ngoài việc là nơi đón khách đến hành lễ, tham quan, đền đã đóng góp một phần cho quá trình xây dựng và sự nghiệp giải phóng dân tộc. Là nơi được Chủ tịch Ủy ban lâm thời cách mạng Huyện Hữu Lũng Lã Văn Lô (Chủ tịch huyện Hữu Lũng) dùng làm địa bàn chỉ đạo phong trào cách mạng. Là nơi đóng quân của đội tự vệ Hoàng Hoa Thám trong các chiến dịch Biên giới và Thu đông 1947 - 1950.
