Tổng lưu lượng hành khách vận chuyển bằng đường hàng không tăng đều trong giai đoạn từ 2010 – 2012 với tốc độ tăng trên 10% hàng năm. Tuy nhiên, nhận xét trong tổng sản lượng hành khách tại các cảng hàng không chính của Việt Nam, lưu lượng các tuyến bay Việt – Lào mới chỉ đóng góp 1 phần nhỏ và chưa ảnh hưởng lớn tới năng lực đáp ứng của các cảng hàng không này.
3.3 Hệ thống vận tải đường thủy nội địa
Mặc dù phát triển hệ thống vận tải đường thủy nội địa ở cả Việt Nam và Lào còn nhiều tiềm năng nhưng để đáp ứng nhu cầu kết nối giữa hai nước thì loại hình vận tải này gặp nhiều khó khăn do điều kiện địa hình giữa hai nước chủ yếu là núi cao, sông ngòi khu vực giáp ranh ngắn, hẹp và có độ dốc lớn không phù hợp với phát triển vận tải hàng hóa khối lượng lớn.
Hiện tại, hệ thống đương thủy nội địa của Lào chủ yếu phát triển dọc theo sông Mê Kông và kết nối với Thái Lan phục vụ chủ yếu nhu cầu vận tải hành khách, hàng hóa cự ly ngắn của các tỉnh Luongprabang, Oudomxay và Bokeo. Về phái Việt Nam, hệ thống vận tải nội dịa chủ yếu phát triển tại các khu vực đồng bằng thuộc Bắc và Nam Bộ, đáp ứng một phần nhu cầu vận tải hành khách và hàng hóa ( vật liệu xây dựng, Xăng dầu,Lúa, Gạo…)
