Ngày 1/ 2/ 2016, Tổ chức Y tế Thế giới (WHO) ban bố tình trạng khẩn cấp y tế toàn cầu về virus Zika, sau khi tham khảo ý kiến của các chuyên gia về dịch tễ học, y tế công cộng, bệnh truyền nhiễm từ khắp thế giới tại một cuộc họp của Ủy ban Khẩn cấp Y tế Quốc tế thuộc WHO.
