Một trong những đặc trưng nổi bật của phương pháp giáo dục Mỹ là tôn trọng thực tế, hiệu quả và "không nhồi nhét". Một học kỳ, thay vì học học 7-10 môn học như ở Việt Nam, ở Mỹ, sinh viên Mỹ chỉ học 4 đến 5 môn, hiếm có sinh viên nào chọn học 6 môn một học kỳ. Một năm học ở Mỹ trên lý thuyết là học 9 tháng nhưng thời gian học thực tế chỉ thường khoảng 7 tháng vì sinh viên ở đây có rất nhiều kỳ nghỉ xuyên suốt một năm học như đã nói ở trên.
