Tính độc của asen phụ thuộc rất nhiều vào bản chất của các hợp chất mà nó hình
thành, đặc biệt là hoá trị. Asen hoá trị 3 độc hơn rất nhiều so với asen hoá trị 5.
Tính độc của asen vô cơ (tri ôxit asen) đối với con người đã được biết từ lâu. Liều
lượng gây chết người khoảng 50-300 mg nhưng phụ thuộc vào từng cá thể (Clark
et al.,1997). Những biểu hiện của ngộ độc asen mãn tính bao gồm: yếu ớt, mất
phản xạ, mệt mỏi, viêm dạ dày, viêm ruột kết, chán ăn, giảm cân, rụng tóc,... Con
người bị nhiễm độc asen lâu dài qua thức ăn hoặc không khí dẫn đến bệnh tim
mạch, rối loạn hệ thần kinh, rối loạn tuần hoàn máu, móng giòn dễ gãy với những
vạch trắng ngang móng, rối loạn chức năng gan, thận (Bissen & Frimmel, 2003).
Ngộ độc asen cấp tính có thể gây buồn nôn, khô miệng, khô họng, rút cơ, đau
bụng, ngứa tay, ngứa chân, rối loạn tuần hoàn máu, suy nhược thần kinh,…
