Hội nghị toàn cầu về phòng chống căn bệnh thế kỉ AIDS đã bắt đầu làm việc tại thủ đô Mexico City của Mexico sau những cảnh báo rằng khả năng chiến thắng căn bệnh này còn xa vời. Cho đến nay đã có hơn 25 triệu người chết vì căn bệnh thế kỉ AIDS kể từ khi căn bệnh lần đầu tiên xuất hiện năm 1981. Hiện có khoảng 33 triệu người đang sống chung với căn bệnh này và 90% trong số đó là ở các nước nghèo.
Trong hai năm qua đã có một nỗ lực lớn để giúp đỡ những người mắc bệnh, nhưng đến nay mới có khoảng 3 triệu bệnh nhân được tiếp xúc với thuốc chống lại sự phát triển của virus HIV. Bà Margaret Chan, tổng giám đốc tổ chức y tế thế giới, cảnh báo cuộc chiến chống căn bệnh AIDS sẽ còn kéo dài.(Tuổi trẻ 05/08/2008)
