Dinh Độc Lập (còn gọi là dinh Thống Nhất) là một di tích có giá trị cao về mặt kiến trúc và là nơi lưu giữ nhiều dấu ấn của lịch sử Việt Nam. Dinh được người Pháp xây dựng năm 1868 và hoàn thành năm 1871.
25/6/1976 Bộ trưởng Bộ Văn hóa công nhận Dinh Độc Lập là Di tích lịch sử văn hóa quốc gia.
12/8/2009 được thủ tướng chính phủ Việt Nam xếp hạng là một trong 10 di tích quốc gia đầu tiên của cả nước.
Dinh Độc Lập mở cửa đón khách du lịch từ năm 1990 và hiện nay, mỗi ngày có hàng nghìn lượt khách trong nước và quốc tế tới tham quan.

Bảo tàng được thành lập năm 1978 với tên gọi ban đầu là Bảo tàng Cách mạng thành phố Hồ Chí Minh. Ngày 13-12-1999, đổi tên thành Bảo tàng Thành Phố Hồ Chí Minh, là nơi trưng bày các hiện vật và tư liệu về sự hình thành, lịch sử đấu tranh và phát triển của thành phố Hồ Chí Minh.
Tác giả thiết kế công trình là kiến trúc sư người Nga nổi tiếng - ông Garon Isacovich. Đây là một trong 5 bảo tàng tiêu biểu được công bố trong danh sách “Tp.HCM - 100 điều thú vị” với phong cách kiến trúc đặc sắc, kết hợp Á – Âu và là một địa chỉ tham quan thu hút du khách trong nước và quốc tế.
